Course Description

Current interest in trauma, attachment theory, the neurobiology of attachment, and the relational model of psychoanalysis is changing the way we think about development and psychopathology.  An understanding of dissociation has broad clinical applications for the conceptualization and treatment of a variety of disorders.

This course will provide an overview of past and current concepts of dissociation and dissociative disorders, emphasizing their application to psychoanalytic work with a variety of patients.  Topics include the connection of dissociation to developmental trauma, the manifestations of unintegrated mental and bodily states, the representation of internalized attachment patterns in dissociated self- states, and implications for treatment.  Case material related to Dissociative Identity Disorder will be included to illustrate theoretical, diagnostic and treatment issues.

Educational Objectives

Upon completion of this activity participants should be able to:

  1. Describe how early interpersonal trauma can lead to the development of dissociated and contradictory self-states.

  2. Identify manifestations of dissociation in clinical encounters.

  3. Serve as a relational bridge between the patient’s dissociated self-states.

  4. Better negotiate treatment issues, such as the interactive regulation of emotions, the management of enactments, and the maintenance of a secure frame and holding environment.
