ABSTRACT : This two-part workshop will focus upon the nuances of the spoken word in the clinical hour. Emphasizing that psychoanalysis and psychoanalytically-informed psychotherapies are essentially 'listening cures', the workshop will delineate ways of listening and discerning the conscious and unconscious functions of language.
A special feature of these presentations will be their comparing and contrasting the mother-tongue usage versus speaking in a later acquired language, thus opening up new vistas for deeper work with bilingual patients and with the bilingual therapist's own internal associations and verbal elements of reverie.
Differences in word-usage when it comes to the poetic versus prose form will also be highlighted and the importance of listening to the clinical material as a poem will be demonstrated. Illustrations from daily life, cross-cultural dialogue, and poetry will be deployed to enliven the proposed ideas and their therapeutic significance.
EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES:
Upon completion of this CE activity, participants should be able to:
Discern the conscious and unconscious functions of language.
Identify the differences when speaking in one’s mother tongue and when using an adopted language.
List the components of the poetic form of communication.
Utilize these skills to interpret unconscious determinants of current dysfunction.
