Psychoanalytic Training Program
LAISPS’ psychoanalytic training program provides in-depth education in the theory and technique of psychoanalysis along with clinical experience in psychoanalytic practice and research. The program encompasses the broad range of psychoanalytic thought, including classical psychoanalysis, ego psychology, object relations, and attachment theory as well as contemporary theories of self psychology, intersubjectivity, and relational perspectives. Candidates receive extensive education in these theoretical perspectives and their clinical application, and are encouraged to think independently and develop their own psychoanalytic identities. The program is based on the tripartite model in which academic coursework, supervised analytic cases, and personal analysis are interwoven to provide a rich and comprehensive training experience. LAISPS’ psychoanalytic training program awards a Certificate of Psychoanalysis and a Psy.D. in Psychoanalysis.
LAISPS does not discriminate on the basis of age, race, gender, sexual orientation, nationality, ethnicity, or religion in its administrative or educational policies or in any Institute-related program. LAISPS maintains a policy of non-discrimination for persons with disabilities otherwise qualified in accordance with California and Federal law.
Ph.D. in Psychoanalysis
Candidates in the psychoanalytic training program may also earn a Ph.D. in Psychoanalysis by completing additional coursework and a dissertation, which constitutes an original contribution to psychoanalytic knowledge.
LAISPS has been authorized by the State of California to train qualified individuals who are not mental health professionals but have doctoral degrees from accredited or approved institutes to become Research Psychoanalysts. These candidates develop a thorough knowledge of the theory and clinical technique of psychoanalysis in order to enrich their primary professional field and to bring their expertise to the advancement of psychoanalytic thought.
Training and Supervising Analysts
Training and Supervising Analysts are members of LAISPS who have been authorized to conduct personal analysis and supervision of candidates in psychoanalytic training. These analysts provide important professional guidance and leadership within LAISPS. They are appointed to this status based on their extensive experience in conducting psychoanalysis, involvement in psychoanalytic activities, teaching, supervision, publications, committee work, and professional presentations.
