Trauma Studies Course:
Psychodynamic Perspectives on Theory and Treatment

Trauma can have profound and far-reaching psychological effects. As mental health professionals, we are frequently faced with trauma survivors experiencing a wide range of symptoms.
This in-depth course will explore theoretical as well as clinical perspectives on trauma based on psychodynamic thinking. The course will draw from a range of psychodynamic theories including attachment theory, object relations, self psychology, and intersubjectivity to provide a rich and comprehensive understanding of trauma to illustrate the clinical application of theoretical constructs. Classes will be taught by highly skilled psychoanalysts and mental health professionals with extensive experience and expertise in the psychodynamic treatment of trauma.
The curriculum will address a wide realm of topics including:
- Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder
- Neurobiology and Trauma
- Attachment Trauma/Dreams of Infant Trauma
- Intergenerational Transmission of Trauma
- Adult Survivors of Sexual Abuse and Incest
- Domestic Violence
- Traumatic and Chronic Illness
- Combat Trauma
- Massive Group Trauma Including Natural Disasters and Terrorism
- Post-Traumatic Nighrmares
- Contemporary Psychodynamic Perspectives on Adult-Onset Trauma
This program is designed to enhance the clinical skills of mental health professionals including psychologists, social workers, and MFTs as well as psychiatrists, other medical professionals, and clergy. The course will be of value to those who are new to psychodynamic thinking as well as seasoned clinicians looking to deepen their work with trauma survivors. A Certificate of Course Completion will be awarded to participants upon completion of the 24-week course.
